Watercolour thumbnail from photo reference
I won't bore you will all the quick sketches I've done today, suffice it to say I was in a sketching frenzy. I'm so excited to finally have a teacher and so depressed that I haven't focussed enough before on quick sketches from life. So after a few more thumbnails with various media this morning, I headed out to tackle some quick sketches before the weather turned sour.
Charcoal pencil & water
The challenge here was to sketch in minutes rather than my usual hours. Raindrops all over the cheap sketch pad spurred me on. This is the first time I've mixed charcoal with water and I rather like it.
On the way home the sun came out so I stopped at the San Francesco church and tried my Pental waterbrush with watercolours. I was amazed how well it worked just wiping the brush on a paper towel between colours.

I think your sketches are fantastic..Looking forward to seeing more! Don't you feel more relaxed when you don't feel that you have to create a "masterpiece"?
Debbie - Thank you. And yes, I felt very relaxed. Blogger is playing up, so I can't find your blog - please let me know where you are. It keeps communicating with me in German. Is anyone else having problems?
I hope mine doesn't start speaking German. Very nice quick sketches. I love the colored one of the church.
Thse are great sketches again Robyn and it seems that you are enjoyoing doing it! Yes, water works nice with just simply charcoal or even a very soft pencil...your charcoal sketches show it off very subtle and nice...amazing how many different effects we can achieve by very simple means!

Re: Your post....Wow you are certainly getting out with your sketchbook now and what beautiful results. I love the charcoal sketches (being a monochrome fan they appeal) but I also love your watercolour at the bottom...Just gorgeous, so much character.

Robyn - I love the quick sketches you're doing. That's something I need to do...practice sketching quickly instead of working too long to creat a masterpiece. I like the ones of the piazza. Never tried charcoal and water. The sketch of the church is lovely!

My comments function seems to have got back to normal - they were turning up with that garbage of code you always get when you send an e-mail to an address which doesn't exist AND dumping them all in one post. Blogger Support knew about the garbage code in the comments - but not about the German. I left a message and maybe would be a good idea if others did likewise?
I always say that the trick is to aim to produce a sketch not a perfect picture and to do so quickly rather than spending ages. I actually prefer the quickies because it seems to me you've really captured the essence in those - I especially love the top one.
Beautiful loose heartfelt sketches - LOVE the colors on that last one. Looks like sunshine itself...
A frenzy! I love it! These are wonderful, timeless sketches. What is the name of that little restaurant tucked in there by the church?

I would have sworn I left a comment here, but I guess not. I love that you're doing so much sketching. I wish I could sketch quickly. I tend to overwork everything, and often simpler is better. I love the sketch of the church. Nice work!

Liz, the restaurant is Muzzicone. It specalises in the huge Chianina steaks (Bistecca Fiorentina) that this area is famous for. But I don't eat anything with big brown eyes.
